The Brea Gallery, in collaboration with Muzeo: Museum and Cultural Center, will host the Threads That Bind Exhibition from October 14th to December 8th 2023. Weaving together the stories of twelve talented women artists from California, this exhibition explores the ways fabric and textile can be used to “give voice to issues that bind us.”
Michelle Espino, Muzeo’s Curatorial Assistant, explains how Threads that Bind revisits the timeless practice of weaving and needlework, and use of fibers and textiles, through a contemporary lens. “The two concepts we kept at the forefront of our minds during our selection process was versatility and dynamism. Threads That Bind showcases the versatile artform of weaving and embroidery techniques, and of textile as a medium. The participating artists each offer distinct styles, whether it is a needle and thread, upcycling materials, or meticulous labor, that transforms a static medium into an entirely different form. Additionally, what makes these works more inventive is how the artists convey their voice and stories through use of color, mixed media, and conditions of found materials.” The exhibition also allows visitors a creative opportunity to design a patch for our collaborative quilt, and a reflective writing activity of Threads That Bind themes.
During the run of Threads That Bind, the Gallery will also feature two events highlighting exhibiting artists. The Fresh{AIR}: Artist in Residence returns to the gallery the weekend of November 11th and 12th, from 12pm to 5pm, featuring artist Melody Nunez, who will be creating work, engaging with viewers, and answering questions. The last weekend of the show, December 2nd and 3rd, artist Elise Vazelakis will be taking over our Brea Gallery Instagram account to share her process and answer questions.
Exhibiting artists include: Ashley Cole, Renata Daina, Anna Luisa Delgado, Carole Gelker, Annette Heully, Brittany Kiertzner, Lesley Kice Nishigawara, Melody Nunez, Lindsay Preston Zappas, Elise Vazelakis, Peggy Wiedemann, and Lorraine Woodruff-long.
