EDITORS' PICKS

We don't have the resources to write in-depth stories about everything.  Our editors want to share a few more events each week that we think you should know about.  These picks are chosen by them without input from the organizations listed.

Led by Josh Nelson and Kevin van den Elzen, the band performs jazz versions of two classic Broadway musicals. The first half of the concert takes listeners through the "Porgy and Bess" album that featured arrangements by Gil Evans and showcased Miles Davis. The second half presents Shelly Manne’s famous recording, "My Fair Lady Swings with the Un-original Cast." 8 p.m. January 18 at Irvine Barclay Theatre.

One of Canada's most famous musicians, composer-singer-pianist Burton Cummings is responsible for some of The Guess Who's greatest hits: "These Eyes, "Laughing," "No Time," "American Woman." 7 p.m. January 12 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano.

Learn about different techniques of master watercolorists: wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, color bleeding, layering and the importance of light and shade in watercolor painting.  Explore the same scene several times using different colors and materials. At the end of the class you'll pick your favorite work, which will be framed in a mat board ready for hanging. 10:30 a.m. January 15 at Sawdust Art Festival, Laguna Beach.
