EDITORS' PICKS

We don't have the resources to write in-depth stories about everything.  Our editors want to share a few more events each week that we think you should know about.  These picks are chosen by them without input from the organizations listed.

Ocean Encounter explores the ocean's five zones. Take a journey through the brightly lit “Sunlight Zone” into the pitch-black depths of the “Trenches." Encounter stunning marine life, learn how human activity impacts these fragile ecosystems, and explore how small changes on land can make big waves in ocean conservation. Opens May 24 at the Discovery Cube in Santa Ana.

A combination of vintage cinema and contemporary music, this unique event features a silent film about Louis Armstrong with a live score composed and performed by Wynton Marsalis and a 10-piece all-star jazz ensemble. Virtuoso pianist Cecile Licad will play the music of 19th century American composer L.M. Gottschalk. 8 p.m. May 20 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

Student teams will premiere newly created musical instruments, playing tunes and sharing their inspirations. A panel of judges will declare the winner at the end of the event. A faculty band will be the supporting act. 6:30 p.m. May 19 at UCI Winifred Smith Hall.
